The reason Joe signed to play in BIG3
Joe signed to play in the BIG3 in March 2019 and the reason he signed was something personal.
It was to pull himself back after going through the lowest point in his life. In an interview with Undefeated, he said he used it as a therapy.
His mom passed away in February, and being the only child, it was tough for him, so he needed to do something that kept him busy, and BIG3 was it.
His mother, Diane Johnson, had been fighting cancer since 2008, having been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that develops from plasma cells in the bone marrow.
She was a single mother who raised her only son, working the graveyard shift and as a nurse at a psychiatric ward.
In an interview with ESPN in 2014, Joe had said that his mother was cancer-free.
He also said that his mother meant a lot to him and her working effortlessly to support them was a driving force to him to become a good basketball player, person, and son because he hated seeing her work hard.
And the most gratifying moment for him was when he turned pro and was established enough that his mother no longer had to work.
However, Diane lost her life in 2018. Joe said she was sick the whole time in the 2017-18 season.
Joe says what basketball means to him
Joe fell in love with basketball when he was around seven or eight years old.
He couldn’t put it down from that point onwards and it truly became his first true love.

He was strictly point guard and couldn’t play other positions, but when he reached 10th, his height drastically increased. He grew four or five inches tall.
When asked what basketball means to him at present days, he said basketball has opened so many doors for him, so he can’t just forget and put it down.
“That’s my first love at seven years old, and I will do whatever I can to be able to still play at a high level from time to time, and just because he is not in the NBA doesn’t mean I don’t love to compete. I still love to compete at a high level whenever I am given the opportunity “, he added.
