Husband and children
Carolyn Joan Covel was happily married to her husband Hubert Keith Covel Jr. They exchanged wedding vows in June 1960.
Hubert used to serve overseas in the military but after getting married to Carolyn, he started working in the oil field industry and worked there for 35 years of his life.
After retiring, he became active in the Masonic Lodge and Calvary Freewill Baptist Church in Norman Oklahoma.
From their marital bliss, they welcomed three children, Toby Keith, Tracy Covel, and Tonni Covel.
Her son, Tracy, is a pastor whereas her daughter, Tonni, used to manage her brother, Toby's music career and often traveled along with her brother.
She lost her husband to a road accident
On March 24, 2001, tragic news surfaced that her husband, Hubert, died in a road accident. He was just 67 years old at the time.
Hubert was reportedly heading home from a childhood friend's barbecue in Lindsay, Oklahoma in his pickup truck.
He had crossed a median on Interstate 35 south of Norman and collided with a tour bus.
He sustained head and internal injuries leading to his death on the spot.
Initially, the family thought Hubert had suffered a stroke that led him to cause the accident.
Toby said that he was a good driver and was driving only at the speed of 35 miles per hour and speculated that something happened that led him to get over the median.
Later the Law Offices of Laird and McCloskey reported that another vehicle had bumped Hubert's truck and filed a wrongful death lawsuit to clear Hubert's name.
As per the evidence presented in the trial, a charter bus which was owned by Elias and Pedro Rodriguez had been advised of an urgent need for brake repairs before Hubert's pickup truck struck the bus.
The judge found no fault on the part of Hubert in the accident and his family was given $2.8 million in damages for his death.
Her son's married life
Toby Keith had been happily married to his wife, Tricia Lucus, since March 24, 1984.
They met for the first time at a nightclub in Oklahoma when Toby was 20 and Tricia was 19 in the early 1980s.
Toby and Tricia had been blessed with three children. Their eldest daughter, Shelly Covel Rowland, was born to Tricia from her previous relationship.
Toby adopted Shelly right after marrying Tricia. They then gave birth to a daughter in September 2985 and named her Krystal Keith.
Their third child, a son, was born in April 1997 and they named him Stelen Keith Covel.
While talking about his children, Toby said he has great kids and he doesn’t have any issues at all with them.
He added his children grew up with him being successful but they are not hooked on that part of the business.
Her son lost his battle with cancer
Toby revealed through his social media that he was diagnosed with stomach cancer on June 12, 2022, and said he had been battling cancer for a couple of months.
He revealed that for the past six months, he had been receiving chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.
Even though he said he was feeling good and the treatment went well, he lost his life to stomach cancer on February 5, 2024.
His death was announced by his family through "X". According to the post, Toby died peacefully while being surrounded by his family.
