Jude helped his father understand everything
Jude's father Steven during his interview on Team Coco talked about how an incident involving Jude helped him understand everything.
Steven talked about his parents and said they immigrated in 1988.
He said his father was so impatient that even though he owned a home in Seoul, he didn’t wait and migrated to a new place.
He was doing well for himself as an architect but he wanted to leave so bad.
He further added that his mother told his father to wait until the Olympics so that the housing value might go up and they would have some money to move to Canada.
But his father was like Nope, getting out of here. He said they just jumped on a plane and went to Canada.
They lived in Canada for a year and then went to Michigan.
Steven said he thinks the key component of all of this was that his parents didn’t explain anything to their children.
He also shared a recent event that took place with Jude. Steven, after becoming a father, confronted his father.
In his defense, he turned to two or three-year-old Jude, who was standing there at the time, and said Jude didn’t know as well.
Steven then said Jude knows and he is taking in everything you are putting out.
He then further pointed out that even though Jude might not be able to conceptually understand it and speak to his grandfather about it but he feels everything.
This made him understand everything and Steven told his father, "You didn’t explain anything to me and that you literally took safety and then displaced it and didn’t explain anything."
Steven then agreed that he was suddenly in this new country, and was part of a completely different culture.
The dark part of immigration is that it takes a while as first a person is displaced and then there is this slow separation from your parents over the years because the child gets more ingratiated into the new place whereas their parents are still stuck where they are at.
Is Jude being brought up in Korean tradition?
During his father's interview on Team Coco, the host, Conan, asked Steven if he was ready or nervous about becoming a father for the second time to which Steven asked if anyone was ever ready.
He then shared that when his son was born he was made to face himself and he realized that he was actually a terrible person.
He then added that there is just some space for people to grow and that’s where now he only speaks in the way people hear him which is in these quips of philosophical quandaries.
The host then asked Steven whether he was raising his children with a certain Korean tradition and if the traditions were important or weird to him.
He replied saying yes but also said that there are some Korean traditions that were really funky.
He then shared his experience when he was a kid.
He said when a kid wets the bed, they put rice shifter on their head and make them go to the next-door neighbor and ask for salt.
Steven said it was just public shaming.
The host and Steven then joked a little and said Irish and Korean are similar in some way as they are both allergic to the sun and both are heavy drinkers.
In the end, however, Conan says Steven doesn’t know much about Korean to which Steven agrees.
