Marko’s parents were never disappointed in his decision not to follow in their footsteps

Marko’s mother, Visnja, was a judo state champion, while his father, Zeljko, was a wrestler.

As a son of martial artists, many people expected him to follow in their footsteps, but it was never his dream.

He aspired to become a professional footballer from an early age. He started playing football in the first grade of primary school.

In an interview, he said his parents were never disappointed that he didn’t choose some of the martial arts they were good at.

“I always wanted to become a footballer. Nobody knows who the best wrestler in the world is. In football, things aren’t like that-everybody knows who the best is, and half the world knows the good ones. My parents understood this”, he told FourFour Two Newsletter in 2016.

During the same interview, he also revealed that he sends all of his money to his parents because he doesn’t have a big appetite. The only weakness he has is cars.

Who is Marko’s idol?

Marko grew up idolizing Ronaldinho. According to him, Ronaldinho played real football.

His style was recognizable, and he played with a smile on his face, which he believes should be the sheer essence of the sport.

Marko’s career so far

Marko spent five years at Dinamo Zagreb between 2004 and 2009

He then returned to his childhood club, ZET, in 2009 before joining Croatian side Lokomotiva Zagreb in 2010, where he began his professional career in 2012

His impressive performance at the club provided him the chance to represent his nation in September 2014 against Cyprus

Unfortunately, after several injuries, he was loaned out to six different clubs. Before joining Rijeka in 2023, he was playing on loan for Empoli from Juventus.

On an international level, Marko has represented Croatia at UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup

Croatia reached the final but was defeated 4-2 by France. After five years without a cap, he was called for Euro qualifying matches in November 2023

Croatia made it to the UEFA Nations League after a 3-2 win against Spain.
