Evonne was born on July 31, 1951, in Griffith, New South Wales, Australia, to her father, Kenny Goolagong, and Melinda Goolagong

She is a former tennis player who has won seven Grand Slam singles titles. She was the first indigenous Australian to win a Grand Slam singles title

When she retired in 1983 in Florida, United States, she promoted tennis and encouraged indigenous Australians to take the sport.

She has also established the Evonne Goolagong Foundation, which provides opportunities for Indigenous children to play tennis and learn valuable life skills.

She even got inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1988.

The Initial Period Of Playing Tennis Was Painful For Evonne

Evonne claimed that she first started her tennis career in Sydney as it was painful for her because she had to leave her family.

She said in an interview that she used to cry at night because of homesickness.

Despite having such troubles, she didn’t quit it because she had a dream which came to her when she read a princess magazine story.

The story included a young girl trained and taken to Wimbledon, where different tennis tournaments happen.

The girl in the story had played on the magical center court and won.

Later, Evonne discovered that Wimbledon was real in London, England, which became her dream.

Evonne said that she used to practice tennis at the practice wall to fulfill her dream because she hardly used to go on a tennis court.

How Evonne Started Her Journey With Tennis?

Before getting introduced to tennis, Evonne used to play with a handle of an apple crate by hitting balls with it.

In an interview, she said she calls the handle “Bundi.” She said she started practicing by hitting a ball within it in the wall, water tanks.

She said that she used to compete daily by challenging her high score every day.

At that time, her father was an itinerant sheep shearer, and his boss took her whole family to Berlin. Luckily, there was a tennis club right behind their residency, and it was the first time Evonne was introduced to a tennis court.
