Before her, Carter was married to his first wife, Italian-Yugoslavian Anna Scratuglia, whom he met while working in Europe

She was his Italian tutor in Rome. He asked Anna to join him in New York and got married in 1964

However, their marriage did not work out after more than two decades. They got divorced in 1990.

She was born on the 3rd of October, 1956. She passed away at the age of 49 on the 10th of February, 2006.

Carter passed away at the age of 95. The news of his demise was announced via his official website on the 23rd of April, 2024

His son Miguel later confirmed the news, stating that he died peacefully at his home in New York

He is survived by his wife, his son, his stepdaughter, and one granddaughter. 

About her ex-husband, Terry Carter

Carter was born John Everett DeCoste on the 6th of December in Brooklyn as the only child of William, a handyman, and Mercedes DeCoste, a homemaker.

After his high school graduation from Stuyvesant High School, he served on a ship as a seaman that carried European war refugees to Latin America. 

After six months, he worked as a mail clerk at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

He studied postsecondary courses at Hunter College and Northeastern University

He dropped out and later returned to Northeastern University to finish his Bachelor of Science degree in communications in 1983

While studying there, he played piano with the jazz combo on the weekends.

He was also a law student at St. John's University for nearly two years. 

He dropped out in his second year after two well-known theatre actors, Howard Da Silva and Morris Carnovsky, convinced him to pursue an acting career. 

He then began studying at Howard's acting school.

His first major Broadway role was the lead opposite Eartha Kitt in the play Mrs. Patterson (1954).

In 1956, he broke the barriers by becoming the first black actor to be cast as a regular on a Television sitcom, The Phil Silvers Show

He portrayed Private Sugarman.

Although he had no broadcasting background, he became the first black TV anchor newscaster for WBZ-TV Eyewitness News in Boston, the Westinghouse flagship station, in 1965.

In his career spanning more than six decades, he starred in 30-plus series and movies but is most remembered for his role as St. Joe Broadhurst, the sidekick of Deputy Marshal Sam McCloud (Dennis Weaver) in the NBC drama series "McCloud" and as Colonel Tigh in “Battlestar Galactica.”

In 1975, he formed his own production company and made educational documentaries. 

He also produced and directed "Dancing With Life", documenting the career of the dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist Katharine Dunham.

In 2015, the rumor of his death swirled up. 

It was reported he was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Los Angeles by a pick-up truck that was driven by American music executive Marion Hugh "Suge' Knight

It was not him but another Terry Carter who was much younger than him.
