During an interview, Canelo expressed that to stay on a line or a path, he needs discipline and to be grounded, and he believes that his four kids help him to remain grounded. 

He said he always thinks about his four kids before making any decisions because he knows the repercussions and the impact they will have in their lives.

  1. Canelo is the youngest of his parent’s eight children, seven boys and a girl. His father had a popsicle store while his mother was a homemaker.
  2. He is nicknamed “Canelo” because of his redhead and freckles. Canelo is a masculine term for Cinnamon, and it is a common nickname in Mexico. Growing up, he said it would piss him off, stating that in Mexico, they pinch each other when they see redheads.
  3. He was just seven years old when he started working with his father. He helped his father with popsicles on the buses. Canelo always credits his father for teaching him and her siblings to be responsible and for teaching them to be men of good values.
  4. A woman tried kidnapping Canelo when he was just five years old, claiming that he was her son and his parents stole him from the U.S. Because of that, his father had to give statements and everything to prove that he was his son.
  5. Canelo went through a rough path following his parents' divorce when he was just 13. Following their divorce, he stayed with his father. By that time, all of his siblings were already married, and his father was always working, so he felt lonely.
  6. He fell in love with boxing after he saw his older brother Rigoberto Alvarez fight his first professional fight. He has said his brother is the inspiration behind his boxing career. His brother gave him his first gloves.
  7. Canelo dropped out of school for boxing. He said he never liked school, but he went to school just because he had to. He was in 8th grade when he made his professional debut at the age of 15.
  8. Canelo has described one of the most difficult moments of his life as having to have separated from the mother of his oldest daughter. He said his oldest daughter was just two years old when they got separated and recalled her daughter crying on the phone, asking why he wasn’t there with him. He also admitted to crying to himself many nights, but he said he had to do it because it wasn’t a good life and wasn’t going to let him grow in that life.
  9. According to Canelo, one of his goals is to become a millionaire in business. He said he receives between 3 million dollars and 4 million dollars every three months from his investment in the real estate business, and he is also about to open 90 to 100 gas stations in Mexico under the name Canelo Energy.
